We are now obsessed with our cell phones, so much so that for many they have become a true extension of themselves. Even just a casual glance at a website's traffic is enough to notice how mobile visits can easily exceed 50% of total sessions in a year . And this also applies (if not above all) to hotels. If there is little to add about traffic, how are mobile bookings doing globally ? Criteo research based on more than 3 billion bookings in the last year on all devices, collected from more than 1800 advertisers in the travel sector, covering 59 countries in the world, answers the age-old question .
Mobile bookings continue to grow… All travel Denmark Phone Number categories see a significant increase in mobile bookings, but it is the hotel segment that shows the most significant growth, with 10 percentage points more than the previous year . A third of room bookings are made on smartphones, with the aggregate of mobile devices reaching 39% . ... thanks to the OTAs The percentage seen above is strongly influenced by the mobile results of OTAs ( and their Apps ), which close 45% of bookings on portable devices , compared to 16% of hotels . OTAs saw a 61% increase in mobile bookings compared to the last quarter of 2016, compared to much slower growth for providers at a modest 11% . Both OTAs and hotels saw a significant decline in tablet bookings (-21% and -15% respectively), with the former also seeing a decline in desktop purchases .
In an appendix of the research, we can instead observe the percentages divided by Regions and Countries, with Europe and North America bringing up the rear of mobile bookings and Italy in the last positions . Last-minutes increasingly on mobile Criteo data shows how a large portion of last-minute purchases are made on portable devices across all travel subcategories. In the case of hotels, 72% of bookings are made via mobile in the twenty-four hours before the stay. In conclusion While OTA bookings on smartphones are taking off, thanks to their apps now installed on many users' devices, independent hotels are struggling to grow at the same speed .
