Fiction has changed a lot since people like Stevenson, Pirandello, Conan Doyle, Mann, Dostoevsky, Calvino and many other ancient and modern classic writers enriched bookshops around the world. It has changed because language has changed, there has been an evolution in communication and therefore also in writing and, consequently, in reading and literary tastes. Today, it seems, we tend to prefer a certain type of narrative. We can take care of our writing as much as we want, but there is a tendency to prefer more direct and simple writing styles, as was suggested in a comment on one of my posts. All paranoia, in my opinion, paranoia in the sense that I believe we must write according to our style and not obeying fashions or market logic.
Short and simple sentences I wonder why? I use short sentences if I have to use them, otherwise I don't. We are not talking about writing for the web, which is read differently from how you read a book. We are talking Phone Number Data about narrative, a novel, literature which must also have a certain aesthetic. The brevity of sentences cannot be used continuously in a novel. For me, at least, it would get boring after a while. I feel like I'm often interrupting my reading. If the sentence is short, then it means there is something affecting its length, such as punctuation. What novel would we write using always simple words, sentences and sentences? For children? Nothing to say about literature for children, but if we write anything else, we can't use that method.
EL Doctorow's fiction Now I want to report a passage from the novel Homer & Langley by Doctorow that I'm reading now (not Cory, I specified that it's another). EL Doctorow is the author of Billy Bathgate and Ragtime , also adapted to the cinema: the former starred Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman, Bruce Willis and Steve Buscemi, while the latter starred James Cagney and Samuel L. Jackson. I really like this author, by whom I have read, in addition to the aforementioned Billy Bathgate , also The New York Aqueduct . I must say that, although I had never married, I was particularly sensitive to women, indeed, I was a great admirer of them, and I will confess straight away that I had a couple of sexual experiences in the period I am talking about, the period of my urban life in handsome young blind man not yet twenty years old, when our parents were alive and organized several social evenings.
